Images of the red car were widely circulated in the social media moments after the accident.

The station commander for Francistown Police Station Lebalang Maniki said a 34-year-old Zimbabwean woman who is married to a Motswana was behind the wheel at the time of the accident. She was travelling alone.

“Our investigations show that the alcohol was smuggled outside the country. The car was carrying beers of various labels such as Castle Lite and Black Label, but it was evident that the beers were not from Botswana although I cannot ascertain where they came from. The woman was subsequently charged P5, 000 for smuggling the alcohol,”sai Maniki.

Sources have said that the beers were smuggled from Zimbabwe through the Matsiloje border. The 34-year-old resides at Tatisiding according to the police.

“We do not know what could have caused the car to overturn,” Maniki said.

He added that the woman’s resident permit had expired but the police referred the matter to immigration officials.

Meanwhile, the alcohol will be confiscated and will ultimately be spolied.
