Leteane aims higher

Now he has issued a warning - no player will cope with his speed in the new season.

That Extension Gunners' young winger Kgololo Leteane is a speed merchant is not in doubt. His aim is to make his third season with Gunners a memorable one and perhaps the most important in his career as he plans to impress foreign scouts. 'I played well in the just ended season but I believe I can improve into an even better player in the new season.

As a team, we were unstoppable at the end of the season and we want to continue with that kind of form when the season starts. But the starting point is the Coca Cola Cup,' he says confidently.

They shy winger says the just ended season was especially fulfilling for him as he was able to attract the attention of the Under-20 team selectors. Now he plans to be a key member of the team in the new season. 'I believe that I was selected because I was excelling even at the time when Gunners were struggling but there is room for improvement.

I cannot say I have reached my peak. This is just the beginning because I am a relatively newcomer in top flight football and I am still young,' the 19-year old says.

While Leteane's good runs down the left flank gave opposition defenders a hard time, it was clear he still had many rough edges. For one he needs to improve on his crossing of the ball. But one of his strengths is the ability to track back to defend after his team loses possession.

'I am working on all aspects of my game. It is a blessing that I am now part of the national Under-20 team because I play with different characters there who can help improve my game,' he says. Leteane told Mmegi Sport that while all his teammates at Gunners have been encouraging him, the arrival of central midfielder Abednico Powell from ECCO City Greens has benefited him even more. He says that Powell is a good motivator and always gives him tips on how to ensure that his individual skill benefits the whole team.

'At Gunners, we are like one big family. When one player suffers a slump in form, we encourage each other and players like Powell will make you feel much better after you committed a silly mistake and that reduces pressure,' he said.

While Leteane hopes to attract foreign scouts in the new season, he is not in a hurry to play for the national team. 'I do not want to put myself under any unnecessary pressure.

I just want to enjoy my game with the junior team and if possible win a contract abroad.

But I would not be hurt if I do not go abroad soon because age is still on my side,' he says.
