Although the police have one man in custody assisting with investigations, the probe is yet to yield leads to arrest other suspects in hiding.

The suspect in question was arrested on Friday in Gaborone just hours after the robbery.

The Botswana Police Service (BPS) have thus appealed to members of the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of the other suspects who are on the run.

According to BPS Head of Crime Intelligence, Nunu Lesetedi the suspects robbed G4S of cash in a transit vehicle.

Although earlier reports indicated that two men were involved in the armed robbery incident, Lesetedi said they are looking for more than two suspects still at large.

“We haven’t established the number of those at large, but there are a few of them, more than two. At the moment, there are few details to share because investigations are continuing,” Lesetedi said.

“We appeal to the members of the public to help with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects.”

He added they have so far found the getaway car, a VW polo, which was used in the robbery. The car was found abandoned near the Mmopane Block 1 area, just a few minutes’ drive outside Gaborone.

According to reports, the robbers are said to have followed the G4S cash in transit van that was going to load cash on FNB ATMs. The armed men staged the robbery at Block 6 near Red Dot shopping complex.

The robbery happened barely two months after another incident in which police shot and killed at least three suspected armed robbers who were intercepted while committing the crime at Block 6.

Cases of armed robbery of armoured cash in transit vehicles have become increasingly prevalent in recent years.

In May 2020, armed robbers who got away with over P2 million cash also attacked a Security Systems armoured vehicle.
