Makwala crossed the line after 44.94, competing against the best one-lap runners in the world. Steven Gardiner of Bahamas claimed the gold medal clocking 43.85 recording his season’s best (SB), Colombian Anthony Zambrano got the silver with a time of 44.08 and Grenadian Kirani James walked away with bronze after stopping the clock at 44.19.

These are likely the last Olympics for Makwala, who missed out on a chance to bow out with a medal. All the hopes for a medal seem to be diminishing with each event. Focus now shifts to the 4x400m relay team, which is in action tomorrow.
