BNSC Act To Be Finalised Next year

The Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) Act is set to be finalised next year with Parliament expected to complete the amendments between July and August.

Speaking during BNSC the Annual General Meeting (AGM) last week, the board chairman, Marumo Morule said consultations have resumed at the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development (MYSC) to agree on governance model for Botswana Sport for purposes of efficient and effective operations, economic and stream-lining of functions to eliminate duplication. “A lot of ground has been covered with the involvement of MYSC, Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) and National Sport Associations (NSAs). Consultations are expected to be concluded by January,” he said. Morule also said discussions are ongoing regarding rationalising BNSC and BNOC.

He further explained that the process is being done to avoid two successive review of the Act over a short period. He said the review of the Act would resume on February 2022 with the final draft to be taken to Parliament during the July/August seating. Morule informed the NSAs that during the 2020/2021 financial year, a temporary funding model was adopted. “The criteria used was based on the contribution to BNSC Vision 2028 and 2036. NSAs were also categorised as follows: high impact sport (six), middle high impact sport (17), middle impact sport (12) and low impact (4),” he said. Morule said the bulk of the funding went to high impact and middle high impact NSAs.
