Premier League cuts foreign players' quota

The Premier League Committee has already started implementing some of the recommendations and proposals of the Bosele Declaration. As of June 1, the quota of foreign players would be reduced to three from five.

This was confirmed by PLC secretary Setete Phuthego yesterday saying that the move is seen as a great leap forward in trying to develop and nurture local talent. Phuthego also said that the move will go a long way in transforming the league in to a better one as teams will now opt for quality foreign players only since the numbers are limited.

The change is part of a broader strategy geared towards the introduction of a professional league in Botswana by 2012. This was resolved during the week-long FIFA-sponsored Win In Africa With Africa seminar held in Selebi-Phikwe early this year. The proposed changes are contained in what has been dubbed the Bosele Declaration.
Delegates, drawn from all Premier League teams resolved that the quota of foreign players be cut to three, down from five. In the past local teams were allowed to register three foreign players before changing to five and the delegates at the soccer indaba decided to return to the old system.
