SELEBI-PHIKWE: The Botswana Wrestling Federation (BWF) in conjunction with the Selebi-Phikwe Wrestling Club will host a tournament at Bosele Hotel this weekend. The main aim of the tournament is to prepare young wrestlers for the upcoming National Wrestling Championship that will be held in Gaborone on November 14.
BWF president, Moagi Sharp said the tournament is expected to help the young wrestlers monitor their performance ahead of the Gaborone competition.
Sharp said 35 wrestlers from all government primary schools in the country are expected to take part in the Selebi-Phikwe tournament, of which 15 are females.
Sharp said they are going to use female wrestling styles although male wrestlers will also be participating.
“We have decided to use female wrestling style because the tournament is meant for women. We have included male wrestlers in the tournament who will also be using female wrestling style to compete because we want them to prepare for the national tournament,” he said.
Sharp said the tournament is on its second year. He said currently they do not have a sponsor and rely on the Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) grant.
Namibia wrestlers are expected to be part of the National Championships.
“Namibia has confirmed its attendance. We have a relationship with them as in June we also participated in their National Championship in Windhoek,” he said.
