A 23-year-old Zimbabwean man is in police custody after he was arrested on suspicions of illegal hunting in Phakalane Golf Estate last Saturday.

The young man was arrested and handed over to the police by the community. According to Broadhurst Police Station commander, Superintendent Obusitswe Lokae members of the community found a duck struggling, looking like it was deliberately trapped and they rescued it. “After rescuing the duck members of the community allegedly hid in the bush to see the person who they suspect might have trapped it. Later on, they allegedly saw the suspect coming to that area in possession of an empty 20-litre bucket, interrogated him, and reported the matter to the police. We have since taken the duck,” he narrated.

Lokae further stated that investigations into the matter are ongoing whilst the suspect is in custody. He added that he has since established that he entered the country through an ungazetted point of entry because he failed to produce a passport. "The duck is alive even though it has sustained injuries from the trap and we have since handed it to the Department of Wildlife to look after it," he said.
