Avani Hotel and Resort had this morning hosted an insightful Women’s Day event, bringing together voices from different walks of life to share their experiences, challenges and triumphs.
The event, which was attended by women from various sectors, served as a rallying call for empowerment and resilience. It was held under the theme “For all women and girls, rights, equality and empowerment” and was attended to by political leaders, personalities, female journalists, feminists and businesspeople.
A young student from Maoka CJSS set the tone for the day with a passionate plea for women to rise above societal limitations. She emphasised the need for young girls to seize opportunities and break barriers, challenging the stereotypes that have long confined women to the background. Her words resonated with the audience, particularly the younger attendees, who saw in her a reflection of their own struggles and aspirations.
Adding to the day’s thought-provoking discussions, businesswoman and social media personality Mmamdi, formerly known as Tshepiso Marumo, shared her journey navigating the often unforgiving world of business. Speaking candidly, she highlighted the challenges that come with being a woman in a competitive space, particularly in the digital era. She tackled the stigma surrounding women who carve-out a name for themselves online, urging attendees to define their own narratives rather than be confined by societal expectations. “Women are constantly told how they should behave, how they should present themselves, and even how they should succeed. It is up to us to reclaim our own stories,” she shared.
Politics also took centre stage as Botswana National Front Women’s League chairperson, Katlego Morolong, delivered a heartfelt speech on her journey in leadership. Morolong did not shy away from addressing the deep-seated sexism that exists in the political arena, sharing how she has been objectified and called demeaning names simply for daring to lead. Despite these challenges, she stood firm, determined to pave the way for future generations of women in politics. “It is not easy to be a woman in this space, but resilience is key. If we do not stand strong, who will?” she asked.
For her part, Avani marketing manager, Samantha Bogopa thanked the women who had graced the event and pledged to always include and engage women in the hotel’s future events. The Avani Women’s Day event underscored the need for more spaces where women’s voices are not only heard but amplified. As the women continued the day over a light meal and drinks, the message was clear: the journey towards gender equality is still ongoing but with determination women will continue to rise and challenge norms.
