In 2022, five people lost their lives after a shootout and this week during trial the matter played out in court as the state intends to call 38 witnesses.

In court, Kabo Moremong faces charges of robbery. He now stands accused alone because four of his accomplices are now deceased. On November 25, 2022 they attempted to rob a G4S cash in transit (CIT) vehicle at the Sefalana store in Gaborone West.

Along with the alleged robbers an innocent civilian, a CEDA employee was killed during the crossfire. Taking the stand this week an emotional colleague Keletso Ntshelemoka told the court that they had gone for shopping on the fateful day at Sefalana. It was an emotional testimony as she recounted the day her colleague was killed and at some point the court adjourned for 30 minutes to allow the witness to catch her breath.

Giving further testimony was cash security manager at G4S who says on the day he received a call from the police alerting him that they had received intelligence that there was a target on one of their cash in transit vehicles. He said he told the Police the route the vehicle was destined to take.

Next to take the stand was driver of the targeted vehicle Odirile Jonas. He confirmed that on the day he was on duty. He left office around 3pm to collect cash. He was in the company of another Daniel Itumeleng.

According his testimony when they arrived at Sefalana their final stop for the day where they were stopped and asked to identify themselves as per procedure. He said after the slight delay they got the cash and left with the bags headed a car passed outside. When he opened the door for Itumeleng, an unknown person approached them and pointed a gun at him. He further said the said person ordered him to lie down.

As he was down, he heard gun shots and couldn’t confirm to court who had fired the first shot.

He said when he eventually got up he found five dead bodies lying in a pool of blood.

Next to take the stand was a CIT supervisor at G4S one Daniel Itumeleng. He was on duty with the driver collecting cash on the fateful day. He said when they arrived at the vehicle parked outside Sefalana he saw two men approaching the car. He indicated he continued to put the cash consignment inside the car when the armed men ordered him to get inside the car. As he entered another robber got inside with him, as they packed the money in a black plastic they suddenly heard gun shots. For his part the Police officer, Lekgopo told the court he was on duty on day when they were briefed about a looming robbery. He said the target they were told was a G4S cash in transit vehicle, targeted by some unknown criminals. He said they were then dispatched in different groups, using converted unmarked vehicles. He said they did not follow the G4S car as they parked by KFC and waited for instructions. Around 6pm he received a call from the inspector informing that the robbery was going on.

He said they rushed to the scene and when they arrived and went out of the car and spotted the robbers. They had covered their faces with black balaclava. He says he fired warning shots towards one of the robbers. The robber then hid himself behind one of the cars parked at the scene, and with the assistance of other officers, they managed to arrest the man. He said when they questioned him at the scene on what he was doing there, he told police that he stayed in Gaborone West and that he was there with four other men to rob the g4s cash in transit vehicle. Case continues October 3rs, before presiding Magistrate Tshepi Thedi.
