JWANENG: A 20-year-old student, Andrew Kennetseng of Mabutsane has been charged with defiling a 13-year-old girl on New Year’s Eve in 2014. Kennetseng appeared before Magistrate Basetsana Keakantse last week.

Kennetseng, who was 18 years old and in Form Five at that time, is accused of having carnal knowledge of the minor, with the full knowledge that she was a person under the age of 16 years.

The girl’s mother testified in court that her minor daughter went missing on January 2, 2014 and she looked for her and followed her steps which led to a bush.

Having failed to find her, the mother returned home and in the morning, she found her daughter inside the house. The daughter claimed that she had been in the house all along but further grilling by the mother revealed that she had been with Kennetseng throughout the night.

Although the daughter denied that any sexual activity had taken place, the mother took her to the police where she was tested at a clinic and found to have signs of sexual activity.

Kennetseng’s attorney, McBain Kaang said the daughter had told court that she feared her mother and always lied to her.

A doctor who examined the complainant testified that semen had been found in the minor and the specimen had been submitted to the police for lab examination. However, the doctor could not state what had happened to the results.

He stated that the young girl appeared sad and psychologically disturbed but could not comment on the defence attorney’s argument that the girl willingly enticed the accused into an act of intimacy.

The case continues on July 11, 2016.
