Rape case referred to High Court for judgment

FRANCISTOWN: The High Court here will on June 15, 2015 deliver sentence in a case in which Da Silva Keiteretse has been found guilty of a single count of rape. The accused allegedly committed the offence at Kgaphamadi ward in Kasane on April 10, 2012. Da Silva represented himself in the case.

State counsel Moffat Dick told Justice Zibani Makhwade that the case had been referred to the High Court because the magistrate who handled the matter did not have authority to sentence people to more than seven years in jail.

The statutory minimum sentence of rape is 10 years imprisonment.
