FRANCISTOWN: In low income housing, whether in towns or villages, unless one has a water system in the house, water for any domestic use is drawn from a standpipe (or tap). Usually the tap is situated at one of the corners of the compound

In the mornings while preparing for work, people would be seen drawing water from standpipes in buckets and lugging the liquid into the house.  Sometimes the water will cause an annoying splash on the floor, if one is not careful.

The trend (of having taps in the homes) is a far cry from the olden days when nubile lasses would fetch water from the nearest (sometimes distant) stream.  They would then walk home dexterously balancing the bucket on their heads while chatting or yodelling away.
