Convicted former Permanent Secretary to the President, Carter Morupisi has been given a new lease on life by escaping jail term and ordered to pay a total of P130, 000 to State in a matter which left the public with mixed feelings. The State was hoping to nail and send Morupisi to jail and set an example to would be corrupt officers. As a prominent former government official was Morupisi was spared the embarrassment of jail and given 90 days to pay the prescribed amount during his sentencing.

He was convicted on two counts of corruption and one count of money laundering all resulting from the alleged misappropriation of P500 million belonging to the Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund (BPOPF).

His conviction was based only on evidence of purchasing a Toyota Land Cruiser valued at P630,988.99, which was alleged to have been bought for his wife's company with money from BPOPF while he was still its Board chairman.
