Assistant Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Augustine Nyatanga has called on inmates at Gaborone Central Prison to fully embrace the Offender Rehabilitation and Reintegration Path as a critical step towards rebuilding their lives.

During his recent visit to the facility, Nyatanga encouraged prisoners to use their time in custody to reflect on their lives, accept their circumstances and adequately prepare for a productive future after incarceration. He emphasised that personal transformation is central to the correctional journey, noting that self-assessment, behavioural change and positive social interaction are key in shaping responsible and law-abiding citizens.

Nyatanga highlighted that active participation in rehabilitation programmes enables treatment officers to compile comprehensive and credible reports, which play a vital role in determining eligibility for early release through mechanisms such as parole and extra-mural labour. He explained that continuous assessments from chaplaincy, psycho-social services, education, as well as vocational and skills training programmes, contribute significantly to an inmate’s profile from admission through to release.
