Nasha blunders on Hobona swearing

A misinterpretation of Standing Orders by the Speaker, Margaret Nasha, nearly derailed the swearing in of the first opposition female MP, Dr Habaudi Hobona of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP).

Nasha initially forbade the swearing of the newly elected Francistown West MP when Parliament resumes on Monday because it coincided with the budget speech. It is said she thought that there is a Standing Order barring the swearing in of an MP before the budget speech.

She proceeded to inform the BCP that Hobona will not be sworn in on Monday on the basis of this faulty reading of the Standing Orders. She said the MP-elect would sit in the public gallery during the budget speech.
