In an incident in Ramotswa village recently, murder accused Paul Matonko, who was out on bail pending trial, was killed following an alleged altercation that left him severely injured before succumbing to the injuries sustained.
In an interview with Mmegi Online, Ramotswa Police Station Commander, James Moikotlhai said the deceased had a pending single count of murder before his demise.
“We have a murder case of a murder accused (Matonko) who was killed on November 9 at Ramotswa. The deceased was facing a single count of murder from last year, and he was out on bail,” Moikotlhai said.
The Station Commander said Ramotswa police received a report in the early hours of Monday morning after a friend of the deceased notified them of the developments.
“We received a report from a friend who suspected that something might be wrong with his friend, as he did not wake, but his door was still locked, and the key was still inside the lock. He then alerted us,” he said.
Moikotlhai said the police, upon arrival, forced the door open , only to find the lifeless body of Matonko, confirming the suspicions of his friend.
“He was taken to the hospital to confirm if he indeed had passed on, and upon arrival at the hospital, it was confirmed,” he said.
The Station Commander revealed that the deceased died from injuries after he was assaulted by three people on the previous night.
“The previous night, the deceased had an altercation with three suspects, and it was established that he had an injury to his head, but was later discharged that night and went home, where he passed on,” he said.
As of now, it remains unknown to the police what led to the altercation that resulted in the death of Matonko.
Following his passing, three people have been apprehended and charged with a single count of murder. The three suspects, including two females and one male, are all from Ramotswa. They are: Thatayaone Nokane (38), Virginia (48), and Sylvia Moemi (50).
As per the charge sheet, the trio acting together for a common purpose unlawfully caused the death of Matonko at Siga ward in Ramotswa.
