A 20-year-old man, Katlo Mokone, suspected of killing Philemon Tlhatswane, was formally charged with a single count of murder this morning before the Extension II Magistrate Court.

Mokone is suspected of killing Tlhatswane after hitting him with a brick on the head on August 3, 2024, at Lesetlhana Ward in Ramotswa. Mokone, who was formally charged with murder, was further remanded in police custody as the prosecutor, Simon Galebonwe, raised that the matter is still fresh.

“We are making an application for the accused to be further remanded in prison as the investigations are still at an infant stage,” Galebonwe said.

Galebonwe added that the accused should remain in custody as the investigation officer is still on the lookout for two other suspects believed to be in cahoots with Mokone. Mokone, on the other hand, did not oppose the submissions made by the state denying him bail.

Taking the state's submissions into consideration and Mokone’s silence, the presiding magistrate, Queen Moanga, granted the prosecution its wishes on the grounds made.

“The accused is further remanded in prison while the police carry on with their investigations as they stated that they are still on the search for your two friends. Murder is a serious crime, so once the investigations are complete, you can make your bail application then,” she said. Mokone is set to appear on August 21 for mention. The case continues.
