Former Botswana National Front (BNF) president, Otsweletse Moupo, is set to take party members down memory lane when he revisits some of the teachings that once shaped BNF cadres at a gathering next month.

Some of the issues to be touched on include discipline, conduct, deployment and the responsibilities that come with being a party activist. Moupo will make the presentation during the BNF Policy Forum, scheduled for Selebi-Phikwe from October 9 to 11, where he is expected to deliberate on some of the principles he believes are important in building an effective and politically grounded cadre base. Amongst the issues he is expected to revisit are behavioural traits that BNF members were traditionally taught to overcome, reduce, or eliminate. These include dishonesty, which can create a gap between a member’s words and actions, excessive indulgence in alcohol, womanising, and abuse of female comrades, as well as excessive attachment to material possessions and wealth.

However, Moupo’s presentation is expected to place these issues beyond questions of personal morality. Instead, he is likely to examine how such tendencies can affect the organisation, particularly when they are allowed to take root and flourish within its ranks. At the heart of his presentation will be the role of the political cadre. Moupo is expected to argue that cadres are central to translating a party’s political line into action.
