Mentally disturbed man attacks family, kills minor

A family in Mahalapye is reeling from shock and grief after their mentally disturbed family member allegedly went on a violent rampage Sunday early morning, assaulting his relatives and fatally injuring a minor.

According to Mahalapye-Central police station commander, Superintendent Meshack Ranku said the 36-year-old mentally disturbed man allegedly arrived home around 03:00hrs and attacked his family members at their home in Xhosa ward, Mahalapye leaving several injured.

Tragically, Ranku said an 8-year-old girl later that morning succumbed to injuries sustained during the assault.

"We received the report that early morning and upon arrival, we found four family members injured, two women aged 38, 43 and a 49-year-old man had sustained injuries from the assault while the minior was seriously injured. They were all rushed to Mahalapye hospital where a minor was certified dead on arrival by the doctors. Other family members were treated and released" he said.

Ranku stated that the suspect, who is reportedly known to have mental health issues is currently under escort at Mahalapye hospital under psychiatrist observations.

"The suspect will appear today (Tuesday) before Mahalapye Magistrates Court for arraignment faced with two counts of murder and unlawful wounding," he said
