FRANCISTOWN: A Lerala man who pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter will be sentenced on August 15,2024

Kamogelo Moreetsi pleaded guilty to unintentionally killing Benjamin Kebotsemang on February 18, 2023 in Lerala village after facts were read to him. According to the facts, on that fateful day, Kebotsemang and Mpho Fani were entertaining themselves by drinking alcohol at Guzzlers Pond Bar.

“The deceased was very drunk. The deceased was sitted at the back of the bar but later changed positions to sit in front of the bar. The deceased found the accused holding a glass of alcohol and told him (accused) that it was his. The accused responded by telling the deceased the glass was his adding that the deceased was disrespecting other people. The deceased forcefully took the glass from the accused. The accused then slapped the deceased. Other bar patrons then separated the accused and the deceased. The accused then went to sit somewhere else within the bar but moments later the deceased approached him. The accused then struck the deceased with a single fist and he (deceased) fell to the ground. After he was struck with a fist, the deceased started to have difficulties in breathing. The deceased was later taken to the clinic where he was certified dead by medical practitioners,” read the facts.

After the facts were read to Moreetsi, Justice Bashi Moesi said that he was satisfied that Moreetsi’s plea of guilty was unequivocal and convicted him of manslaughter as charged.
