Upon hearing that Member of Parliament (MP) Welheminah Makwinja had lost to Legojane Kebaitse in the Lentsweletau-Lephephe primary elections, some members of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) struggled to contain their excitement.

Jubilant members stood up and shouted, "Ehee! Ne re batla go nna jalo." They continued, "We are not going to sleep, we will be celebrating." Six candidates, Obakeng Kgabo, Makwinja, Kenalekgotla Sebolao, Masego Thantshane, Kgopolo Lenkutwane and Legojane Kebaitse, contested the seat. Kebaitse won with 1,358 votes, followed by Makwinja with 1,032 votes. Kgabo lost with 899 votes, Sebolao with 314 votes and Thantshane with 352 votes. Angered by the excitement and unbecoming behaviour, Regional Chairperson Amos Serebotseng reminded members of conduct. "Bagarona, nna ha batshe.

The BDP constitution is very clear; you are not allowed to celebrate. This is our own internal election. The real battle is coming. Only Lentsweletau people are celebrating, and other democrats are shocked by this behaviour. This is not allowed," Serebotseng said Serebotseng emphasised the importance of unity amongst BDP members, warning that such behaviour could jeopardise the winner's success. Moreover, Serebotseng emphasised the importance of unity amongst BDP members, warning that disunity could make it difficult to win the area. He also reminded members that the winner represents all people, not just a select few. "This is the time to dissolve all campaign teams and form new campaigns that include some members of the structures," he stated.
