FRANCISTOWN: Nominated councillor, Modiri Lucas has defected to the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF), leaving the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) days after the ruling party announced its parliamentary candidates for this year's general elections, Mmegi has established.

Lucas lost to former Botswana National Sport Commission chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng, at the BDP parliamentary primaries in Francistown South more than a month ago. He, however, appealed the results but was not successful.

Cutting his losses with the ruling party, Lucas said that he will now represent the BPF in Francistown South at the 2024 General Election.

“I was hoping for a rerun because my appeal was strong. For example, at Boikhutso ward, there were two polling stations with one voters’ roll. That alone qualifies for a rerun, at least in the very same ward, if not the whole constituency,” Lucas said.

Meanwhile, Lucas and other former BDP diehards will be unveiled by the BPF this afternoon at a press conference in Francistown.
