These days, many Batswana whose native language is Setswana choose not to speak the language with their children, and the fear is that the indigenous language could become extinct.

This has inspired a Motswana woman, Letta Dipatane, to introduce KREKE, an innovative device perfect for today’s technology-centric generation to master both the Setswana and English languages. In an interview with this publication this week, Dipatane Kreke said the facility revolutionises early childhood education by introducing a fun and interactive way for young learners to master Sestwana as the first official language in Botswana. She revealed that KREKE device uses cards, and she started developing the content and liaising with an engineer in China in 2023. Dipatane also disclosed that all recording and packaging were done and designed locally.

“Not all Batswana, especially the millennium generation, speak fluent Setswana even though it’s their mother tongue. The language is taught in schools, both private and government, but the performance or subject grades are below average; therefore, KREKE is the solution,” she said.
