Vice President Slumber Tsogwane officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for a new state-of-the-art primary school in Kopong, a step towards addressing overcrowding and improving the quality of education in the area.

The project, which is being financed under the Second Transitional National Development Plan (TNDP 2), will be implemented using the Development Manager Model and is expected to cost P120 million, covering both the design and construction phases. In his address, Tsogwane highlighted government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that every child has access to quality education, beyond just the provision of infrastructure. “This development is more than just about building schools; it’s about building futures. “Our aim is to provide an education system that will empower our children with the necessary skills for the evolving job market,” he said. The Vice President stressed that government is dedicated to bridging educational gaps by providing modern, well-equipped learning environments that cater to the needs of students and teachers alike.

The new facility will be a 24-stream primary school designed to alleviate the strain on existing schools in Kopong, which have been struggling with overcrowding. Tsogwane noted that the school’s visually appealing, modern design wouldn't only make learning more enjoyable but also create a stimulating environment for students. “This is more than a building; it’s a space where young minds will be nurtured and shaped,” he added. Tsogwane also underscored the economic impact of the project, noting that it would invigorate the local economy by creating job opportunities across its value chain. From construction workers to suppliers, the project is expected to provide much-needed employment, supporting families and contributing to the community’s growth. Minister of Transport and Public Works, Eric Molale echoed Tsogwane’s sentiments, stating that the groundbreaking ceremony is a testament to the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises to the people.

“This project is part of a broader plan to improve infrastructure across the country, ensuring that every region benefits from these developments,” Molale said. He reiterated that government is focused on improving educational facilities nationwide, as this was key to developing a skilled and competitive workforce for the future. According to government officials, once completed, the school is expected to play a critical role in improving primary education in Kopong and the surrounding areas. The project is anticipated to be a catalyst for further development, as improved infrastructure often attracts additional investment in the region.
