Khama made the declaration when he assumed the chieftaincy seat here over the weekend at the Serowe Sports Complex marking his return after political tensions and self-imposed exile. He stated that it is now time to collaborate with the government to improve the livelihoods of Batswana following the regime change. "One of my roles will be to work well with the government. I'm not saying we are going to form a government of Bangwato because we are in Botswana," Khama said. "Botswana already has got its own government, so I will be working with them to develop Botswana and Batswana." Khama further revealed that his duties won't be restricted only to Bangwato as he will also have the duties of being a former president.
"As a former president I have other duties that are for a former president, so don't be surprised when you see me in Gaborone or Boseja but you will see me in Serowe," he said. The former president shared that Bangwato shouldn't for a minute think that he will work only on Serowe as there are other villages of Bangwato. "I will embark on a tour of Palapye, Mahalapye, Shoshong, Bobirwa, Tswapong, Bokalaka, and Boteti to meet with Bangwato to hear from them how they want me to assist them as their Kgosikgolo," Khama remarked. On his immediate action to improve the livelihoods of Bangwato, Khama shared that he will form committees that will work on that. "My role will be to grow our culture and tradition through arts, traditional dance, poems, sports, and recreation by hosting tournaments and events. So, I will have committees that will assist me," he said.
Kgosikgolo also promised to work closely with his uncles so that they could advise how to approach other things. He has since then appointed Peter Seretse as his deputy. Khama's welcome ceremony was attended by Bridget Motsepe whose entry into Botswana was recently lifted alongside Julius Malema.
