Cases of joggers being robbed of their cellphones while taking an evening run are going on the rise, said Gaborone West Station Commander, Agreement Mapeu.
He said that in one such case a female jogger was attacked and raped in his policing area last year. Mapeu said that they have not arrested any culprit.
He appealed to members of the public to always go out in pairs or more when jogging and not carry valuables like cellphones.
According to the police chief, it is women joggers who are mostly vulnerable to such crimes and are easy target for criminals.
Mapeu also spoke about incidents of motorists robbing people. He said that this group of criminals targets people waiting at the bus stop. They pretend to offer the person a lift, Mapeu said.
He added that it is then that the victim is robbed. At times they are robbed when they have boarded the car or are about to. He said they have not arrested anyone in connection with the incidents because in most cases the perpetrators use vehicles with false number plates.
A number of such cases have been reported and are still under investigation.
He advised members of the public not to wait at isolated bus stops alone at night. He said when criminals notice somebody waiting alone they prey on them.
