Ditimamodimo residents look for better name

Residents of Ditimamodimo, a Gaborone residential area well known as Block 7, have been advised to come up with an alternative name for their location.

This came after the residents wrote to Gaborone City Council complaining about the name Ditimamodimo, saying it was a curse and likely going to bring bad luck upon them.

Nominated councillor Kagiso Ntime had wanted to table a motion for removal of the name Ditimamodimo but the mayor, Kagiso Thutlwe, said the city clerk, Mpho Mathe, had advised the residents on procedure to be followed for a name of a location to be changed.

Thutlwe said the power to change the name of a residential area was with the residents.

He warned that the area could not continue to be called Block 7, so the residents should suggest a name that replaces Ditimamodimo.

He said the residents had good numbers, which would influence the change of the name.

“The councillor would have to call a meeting and inform her residents about the procedure,” he advised.

“They need to come up with at least three names so that physical planning people can choose one from the names they prefer.”
