Central District police investigate five rape weekend cases

Central District police are investigating five rape cases that occurred over the weekend in Palapye and Serowe respectively.

Officer Commanding, senior superintendent Paul Oketsang said on Friday night they recorded rape cases, each in Palapye and Serowe respectively, on Saturday they recorded two rape cases in Palapye, and one in Serowe. Oketsang said they managed to arrest two suspects in all the cases and investigations are ongoing to arrest other suspects. Furthermore, the senior police officer revealed that in all of the cases, the victims were raped by people they are familiar with and had spent time with before the incident. “One of the victims was raped by a friend, the other victim by someone who had allegedly proposed a relationship and the other was raped by her ex-boyfriend.

I plead with women to be cautious when surrounded by male strangers [and estranged ones], especially when alcohol consumption is involved,” Oketsang said. Oketsang added that rape cases might not be new in the country, but the manner and frequency at which they are escalating is worrisome. Moreover, he pleaded with men as perpetrators to 'respect' themselves and make it a habit to always remember that ‘no' means, "No"! “Men should remember that having spent time with someone or buying them drinks and gifts does not give them the right to violate them,” Oketsang said.
