FRANCISTOWN: Botswana People’s Party (BPP) will hold a leadership forum in May 2025 wherein the party will discuss the elective congress.

The BPP hasn't held an elective congress in years and most of its central committee members are functionaries who were co-opted after they joined the party from other opposition parties.

According to a press statement issued by acting general-secretary, Venter Galetshabiwe Monday this week, they have decided to convene a leadership forumlater this year, where they will discuss the elective congress.

He stated that they have noted from the deliberations that the concern on the issue of nominated councillors by some members of the BPP and implicating the party is, in fact, a result of decisions by the Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, not the BPP. He further explained that it was the Permanent Secretary under the same ministry who had initially issued a savingramme inviting the general public to apply for nominated councilors and the selection process was a matter subsequently handled by the relevant Minister and the Member of Parliament (MP) of the constituency.

The BPP was neither involved nor been party to those decisions. “We, therefore, advise those attacking the party to avoid doing so. However, the party would like to warn its members against opening unauthorised groups which they use to launch attacks against the party. Any group opened in this manner by any member of the party should be closed forthwith to avoid action being taken against them,” he added.

Meanwhile, last week, the BPP secretary-general and Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship Tiroeaone Ntsima was suspended by party president Motlatsi Molapise for gross misconduct.

Molapise suspended Ntsima for 45 days in accordance with Section 7 (a) of the constitution of the BPP. He was suspended after he instigated some party members to open accounts on social media platforms that are critical of the BPP, which brought the name of the party into disrepute.

In addition, Galetshabiwe stated that a meeting with all BPP MPs in February 2025 and their continued ex-officio attendance at central committee sessions are amongst the resolutions adopted over the weekend. Additionally, the BPP has decided to ready itself for the 2029 General Election, which will include setting up structures across the nation. Galetshabiwe stated that it was also decided that councillors and MPs would contribute funds to the party monthly.

It is time for all stakeholders—parents, community leaders, law enforcement, and society at large—to stand up and take decisive action to end this scourge.Defilement is a crime, and it is unacceptable that it is being treated as...
