Sixty-nine newborns were delivered across two major referral hospitals and nine neonatal units on September 30, as Botswana celebrated its 58th year of independence.
Government has revealed the two major referral hospitals, Princess Marina and Nyangabgwe, saw a total of 28 babies delivered on Independence Day.
Ministry of Health spokesperson Christopher Nyanga told MmegiOnline that they are yet to conclude compiling nationwide Independence birth statistics. He said they could only share the numbers from the two referral hospitals and some hospitals' natal units that had confirmed Independence Day births.
“The statistics at our two major referral hospitals are as follows; Princess Marina Hospital delivered 13 babies, six boys and seven girls. Nyangabgwe Hospital has 15 babies, seven boys and eight girls,” Nyanga disclosed. Of the 15 babies born at Nyangabgwe, he indicated that two of the male births were a set of twins.
Nyanga highlighted that the numbers are set to increase, and they will release more figures as soon as other hospitals share the number of babies delivered. “It is true that this year Independence Day was blessed. The Ministry of Health managed to deliver close to 100 babies,” he said.
The remaining 41 babies were delivered across different hospitals in different parts of Botswana. Scottish Livingstone Hospital delivered 10 babies, Letsholathebe II Memorial, eight, Letlhakane Primary Hospital, four, Tsabong Primary Hospital, four, Selebi Phikwe Gov't Hospital, four, Bamalete Lutheran Hospital, one, and Hukuntsi Primary Hospital, one. Gantsi Primary Hospital delivered six babies and Mahalapye District Hospital delivered three baby girls on Independence Day.
He took the chance to congratulate the mothers on having a safe delivery and thanked the medical personnel.
