FRANCISTOWN: The political marriage of convenience between the Botswana National Front (BNF) and Alliance for Progressives (AP) is on the rocks as the two Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) coalition members are battling for a ward in Molepolole.

The ward, Ntloolengwae in Molepolole North was initially given to the AP activist, Champion Tsomele, to represent the UDC in the upcoming General Election.

However, things took a nasty turn when the president of the UDC, Duma Boko, recently launched the Molepolole North parliamentary candidate Arafat Khan and his aspiring council candidates. During Khan’s launch, Boko presented an aspiring BNF council candidate as the one who will represent the UDC in the upcoming General Election much to the dismay of Tsomele and the AP.

Following Boko’s declaration that a BNF council candidate will represent the UDC in the ward, AP wrote to the UDC asking why a ward that was initially given to its aspiring council candidate is now given to a BNF candidate to contest. The BNF did not respond to the AP’s request which forced Tsomele to take the legal route in a bid to reverse Boko’s decision. But this morning, to Tsomele and the AP’ surprise, the UDC served a notice of opposition through attorney Andile Tau. In the papers is a resolution saying that the national executive committee (NEC) of the UDC has resolved that a BNF candidate will represent the UDC in Ntloolengwae ward in the looming polls. The AP says that it is not privy to the resolution giving the BNF the Ntloolengwae ward to the BNF. In addition, the AP says that none of its leaders who sit in the NEC of the UDC are privy to that resolution because no meeting was ever convened where a decision was taken to give the Ntloolengwae ward to the BNF.

When the matter was heard before Justice Gaolapelwe Ketlogetswe this morning, Tsomele’s attorney Kevin Segadimo requested that the application should be postponed to tomorrow to allow him time to respond to papers filed by the UDC. Segadimo reasoned that there was never a meeting of the NEC of the UDC where a decision was taken to take the ward from the AP and give it to the BNF and as such, there is no resolution to give the ward to the BNF.

Justice Ketlogetswe acceded to Segadimo’s request to postpone the matter to tomorrow. Attorney Tshekiso Tshekiso was holding brief for Duma Boko and Company Attorneys who represent the UDC in the matter.
