FRANCISTOWN: Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) financial woes worsened this week as the Selebi-Phikwe BCL mine and its Tati Nickel Mining Company (TNMC) subsidiary were placed under the management of a provisional liquidator.

At the centre of the BMWU’s troubles is the dwindling membership and subscriptions, which are the lifeblood of the country’s oldest trade union estimated to have started operating in the early 1970s.

The placement of the BCL Mine and TNMC on provisional liquidation follows on the footsteps of DML, African Copper’s Mowana and Thakadu, which were liquidated at different times. Aveng Moolmans, which operated at the TNMC Phoenix mine, suffered a contract non-renewal, which resulted in shedding of jobs. These were important branches of the BMWU.
