Following the recent resignations that have rocked the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), the party has moved swiftly to replace the vacant positions with Dr Lemogang Kwape assuming one of the most critical positions in the Central Committee, the secretary-general.

BDP suffered a heavy defeat in the 2024 General Election which saw a regime shift to opposition party Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) after 58 years. This led to party leaders stepping down, citing reasons that they failed the former ruling BDP.

BDP has since then, through a statement, accepted the resignations and appointed new people.

"BDP Central Committee (CC) has noted and accepted resignations from CC for various reasons. Due to these changes, the CC has made the following changes to fill in the vacancies created," BDP stated.

Kwape has since then been promoted to the secretary-general, a position that was left vacant by the then-secretary Kavis Kario.

Kwape had held the position of deputy secretary-general before the appointment.

"Dr Kwape [will] be elevated to the position of secretary general," read a BDP statement.

Ngaka Ngaka has since then replaced Kwape as the deputy secretary-general.

New additional members were also selected by the now-minor opposition party.

"Additionally, Duelang Setswalo from Charleshill constituency, Motshegetsi Mogami from Tswapong North, and Pelotshweu Baeng from Tswapong South be brought in as central committee members," the BDP stated.

Former president Mokgweetsi Masisi, together with Slumber Tsogwane, remain as the party president and chairperson, respectively, whilst Satar Dada's position of treasurer remains vacant.
