The donation was delivered in the form of Fours vouchers and is expected to assist Childline in meeting some of its operational needs. BDMA Chairperson Siddarth Gothi said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the diamond cutting and polishing sector to respond to pressing social needs within communities. “We are not just participants in the diamond industry. We are part of the community,” said Gothi. “This donation is a way for us to contribute meaningfully and respond to the needs of an organisation that works daily to protect children across Botswana.” Gothi pointed out that the diamond sector has a responsibility to support the country beyond its economic contributions. He referenced BDMA’s previous donation of two vehicles to Childline in 2022 as part of the association’s continued engagement with the NGO.
Childline Botswana operates a 24/7 helpline and provides counselling, legal aid, and advocacy for children in distress. The organisation is also involved in policy influence and public education around child safety and welfare. It works with families, schools, and communities to identify and respond to abuse and exploitation cases. Speaking on behalf of Diamond Hub Coordinator Jacob Thamage, Deputy Director Solomon Moremong acknowledged the role that private sector entities can play in advancing national development goals. “This is not just a donation. It reflects an alignment with Vision 2036 and the broader agenda to create an inclusive, caring society,” said Moremong. “The diamond industry remains one of Botswana’s strongest economic pillars. Its involvement in social causes is both necessary and expected.” He also drew attention to the ongoing efforts to localise skills and retain diamond value in Botswana, stating that the industry has the potential to significantly reduce unemployment if its downstream activities are fully developed. Moremong commended Childline Botswana for its efforts in providing support services in areas where the state may not always reach. “Organisations like Childline play a vital role in safeguarding vulnerable populations, especially children. They work in challenging conditions and require support from all sectors,” Moremong said.
