Police in Mogoditshane have expressed concern over escalating tensions between Batswana and Zimbabwean nationals following a series of violent clashes allegedly linked to rising crime in the area.
The clashes come amid accusations by some local residents that foreign nationals, particularly Zimbabweans, are responsible for the increase in criminal activities in the village.
Confirming the incidents in an interview with this publication, Mogoditshane Acting Police Station Commander, Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi, warned that the situation could spiral out of control and result in loss of life if not addressed urgently. Ramaphoi said the violence began on Saturday at Manyanda Bar in the Sentomole ward, Mogoditshane.
"It is alleged that a group of Zimbabwean nationals locked Batswana inside the bar and assaulted them. Stones were allegedly thrown during the altercation, resulting in damage to the bar's windows," he said.
Police have since registered a case of malicious damage to property following a report lodged by the bar owner. Investigations into the incident are ongoing and no arrest have been made as yet.
According to Ramaphoi, the violence did not end there, on Sunday, a group of locals allegedly went around targeting foreign nationals at their homes, assaulting them one by one. One Zimbabwean man was reportedly left unconscious following the attacks.
"The victim was rushed to Princess Marina Hospital, where he remains admitted. Fortunately, he is in a stable condition," Ramaphoi said.
Ramaphoi further revealed that another violent confrontation erupted on Sunday night, again at Manyanda Bar. Police officers intervened and rescued two Zimbabwean men who had allegedly been severely assaulted.
"Police responded promptly and rescued the two men, who had sustained serious injuries. We are appealing to both Batswana and Zimbabwean nationals to exercise restraint and maintain peace before the situation deteriorates further," Ramaphoi said. He warned that continued retaliatory attacks could have fatal consequences and urged members of the community to allow law enforcement agencies to deal with criminal activities through established legal processes rather than taking matters into their own hands.
Police investigations into the incidents continue.
