Gaborone was linked to a move to the BDP prior to the BNF congress, which was held in Mochudi in July. The Congress ushered in Duma Boko and his campaign team, which Gaborone did not support. However at the time Gaborone denied planning to quit the BNF.

BNF president Duma Boko said he had received no communication from Gaborone to the effect that he was quitting. However he acknowledged receiving information from some BNF members to the effect that a councillor in Gaborone's constituency had been sending SMSs to members informing them that Gaborone has now officially resigned from the BNF.
