FRANCISTOWN: Police in Francistown believe that a suspect in a case in which a man raped a woman in her 30s on Saturday at Area A location, could be the same one in a similar offence that happened three months ago in the same location.

Saturday’s rape incident is said to have happened at around 2am. The suspect remains at large according Francistown Police Station commander Lebalang Maniki.

“The manner in which the Saturday crime was committed is similar to the manner in which the initial crime was committed nearly three months ago,” Maniki said.

Maniki added that on both occasions the man broke into the women's houses and forcibly raped them. Both women stayed in the servants’ quarters at the respective yards.

“When interviewing the victims in both cases each indicated that the person who raped them was ‘speaking English’. That is why we believe a similar person might have committed the two offences. We are not certain if the suspect is

a foreigner or if he was just speaking English in a bid to conceal his true identity,” Maniki said.

The usually quiet neighborhood of Area A has recorded gruesome rape cases in recent years. For example years ago a student at one of the city’s tertiary schools, was resting in her rented servant’s quarters at the back of the main house when an alleged rapist pounced.

He allegedly tied the woman’s hands and legs and covered her face with a cloth before proceeding to rape her all the while threatening her with a knife to keep her from screaming. The rapist remains at large having stolen the woman’s laptop and an undisclosed amount of cash.
