Mares to make Francistown debut

KABELO BORANABI
Mares Vs South Africa. PIC. MORERI SEJAKGOMO
The Mares will play at the country's largest sporting arena, the Francistown Sports Complex for the first time, when they take on Zambia in a crucial 2020 Olympic Games qualifier on October 8.

The team has over the years used the National Stadium and the Lobatse Sports Complex as their home ground.  But on October 8 they will make their first appearance in the 'Ghetto' against Shepolopolo.

The arena has been a haven for the Zebras over the years.  It holds the record number of attendance as in 2015, where 26,262 paid to watch the Zebras' 1-0 win, against Mali.  Speaking to Mmegi Sport, Botswana Football Association (BFA) public relations officer, Tumo Mpatane hopes the euphoria will cascade down to the Mares in the crucial clash.  Mpatane said the move was forced by the unavailability of the National Stadium on the day.

"The women's national

team is going to play the return leg in Francistown.  The ladies have played most of their games in the south for the longest time, (and) unfortunately the National Stadium will not be available on the date and hence we are going to Francistown. We trust that the team will get a good attendance as always.  We plead with Batswana to come in good numbers and support the team," Mpatane said.

The Mares reported for camp today and will face Shepolopolo in the first leg on October 4. The team is on the brink of history after reaching the third round of the qualifiers for the first time.
