Phenyo The Master to start monthly comic shows

Phenyo The Master
After staging a one-man show some time back witty stand up comedian, Phenyo ‘The Master’ Phaladi will start hosting monthly shows at Yarona Country Lodge on September 27, 2018. Phenyo The Master told Arts & Culture that he has 10 years’ experience in the comedy industry, hence the need to push the brand.

“People were starting to wonder if I would come up with something new,” he said. Phenyo The Master said he would feature seasoned comedians like Rekunde, Stokie and Goodie The Bad.

He said he started with them in 2008, hence why it was no brainer he chose them for his shows. He added that even though talent management firm, Major Moves Comedy is not involved, he will continue working with them on other shows.  The comedian who was born and raised in Mochudi said if everything goes well, he will take his monthly shows to other places in the country.  “I will continue reflecting on my journey because I have learnt a lot from all my travels,” he emphasised.   Phenyo The Master was quick to admit that even though the number of comedians has increased, the industry has not grown.  He said free comedy shows hosted on a weekly basis are killing

the whole concept.

“This has caused a decline. People are no longer willing to pay for a comedy show,” he said.  He said as he begins his monthly shows, he has a challenge of choosing between commercial comedians and the ones who host free shows. Phenyo The Master also admitted that he was doing these shows because stand-up comic shows are not hosted frequently.

“Sometimes we would host three shows in Gaborone and still attract the same audience,” he said.  Phenyo The Master said they don’t have sponsors and they are forced to self-fund.

He said he has observed that social media comedians are sometimes a challenge because they use their jokes.

“We do live shows and people should understand that. It is not wise to post your material for free as a stand up comic,” he highlighted. Double tickets for the show are sold at P200 while a single ticket is P150.
