Local football fans are anxiously waiting for the announcement of the teams who would be competing in the inaugural BTC Charity Cup scheduled for next weekend.
The cup has attracted much interest in the past months with fans given a chance to vote for their favourite four teams to take part in the one-day tournament. There was surprise in early voting as Serowe-based side, Miscellaneous held the lead for a week with giants, Gaborone United (GU) and Mochudi Centre Chiefs trailing behind.
However in the last week, league champions, Township Rollers showed their superiority off the field as they climbed to the top of the charts. Popa, by Saturday evening had amassed 17, 533 votes followed by a surprise package in Orapa United with 16, 386 votes.
The Ostriches who have only five seasons in the elite league have proved to be one of the teams, who are growing in terms of support. They are followed by Extension Gunners who have 15, 676 votes while Miscellaneous despite their early lead in the charts occupy fourth sport with 15, 252 votes.
Missing from the top four are sleeping giants,
Chiefs and GU occupied the fifth and sixth spots with 11, 930 and 11, 879 respectively. The voting line was closed in the midnight and official final results would be availed this afternoon at a press briefing.
The winner of the cup will walk away with P200, 000, runners up with P 150, 000 while the semi finalists will get the consolation price of P120, 000 each. It would be interesting to see whether the big three followed teams have made it to the top four or whether minnows Miscellaneous and Orapa United would have managed to hold their positions. The cup will be used as a curtain raiser for the league that is scheduled to start in two weeks.
