The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) on Saturday bid farewell in style their party leader, President Ian Khama giving him a double cab Toyota Land Cruiser, amongst other gifts.

In addition to the presents from the party, Gaborone region gifted Khama a quad bike load trailer, cattle trailer and a generator trailer.  Having received many different gifts including livestock, poultry, generators, farming equipment and many other gifts, the gifts from the BDP are the most expensive Khama has received thus far valued at over P500,000.

Though he expressed gratitude for the gifts, Khama said he wants one more gift from the members - winning the 2019 general election. “I am so happy for the gifts. I really appreciate, but there is one more gift I want from you. I want victory in 2019. I thank you in advance for that gift as I know you will give it to me,” he said.

Khama paid tribute to former president Festus Mogae and other party veterans for paving they way for him. He said he trusted that his Vice President and successor Mokgweetsi Masisi would lead the nation to greater prosperity.

Various speakers at the event, which was held at the state of the art University of Botswana indoor sports facility described Khama as a true ‘democrat’.  Speakers included regional chairpersons who praised Khama for being close to them and ensuring that they carried their mandate. National Youth Executive Council (NYEC) chairperson, Simon Moabi

praised Khama for his leadership and enabling those in the arts to live out of it.

“We thank you for serving Batswana passionately. Artists and sports people are making a living out of their talents under your leadership.  Programmes like the constituency league have helped in keeping the youth away from delinquent behaviours,” he said.

Women’s league president, Dorcas Makgato praised Khama for actively ensuring that women are not forgotten. “We thank you for recognising the need to empower women. You availed funds for women to start their businesses.

You also signed the SADC gender protocol. You also ensured that women hold positions of power and we hope to one day have a woman president,” she said.

Masisi said Khama has served Batswana for a long time. “Your love for Batswana is immeasurable. You served them for over 40 years diligently.  You made sure that there is no instability, you encouraged compromise and we will be counting on your support towards the 2019 general election and beyond. I promise to increase your gains,” he said.

Masisi also praised Khama for the presidential housing appeal and poverty eradication programmes amongst others. He termed Khama promoter-in-chief of culture, sport and arts amongst other things.  Khama will cease being party and national president in two weeks.
