Ronald Chikomo will look to draw level with Jwaneng Galaxy’s Tebogo Sembowa as the Mascom Top 8’s most successful player.
Sembowa has won the trophy four times; twice with Gaborone United (GU) and once with Township Rollers and Galaxy. That places him at the apex of the standing for the most successful player in the Top 8’s seven-year history.
But breathing down heavily on Sembowa’s neck is Zambian wily old fox, Chikomo who has three.
He stands on the brink of another milestone as he leads his Orapa United side against Township Rollers tomorrow at the Francistown Sports Complex.
Chikomo won the competition twice with GU before success with Orapa two seasons ago.
Another man chasing a different milestone is new Orapa coach, Bongani Mafu who has won a trophy in each of the last three seasons.
He won a knockout competition with Zimbabwe giants, Highlanders in his first season,
He will hope to make it a hat trick of titles when he leads Orapa tomorrow after he received his work permit recently.
His assistant, Daniel ‘Chico’ Nare has been instrumental in Orapa’s run as Mafu joined in the dying stages of the competition.
Another record beckons for both Rollers and Orapa who are eyeing a second Top 8 trophy, to join GU as the competition’s most successful sides. In the history of the competition, no side has managed to defend their title.
On two occasions, the trophy has been won by debuting sides, with Orapa the victors in 2016 while Galaxy won it last year.
