Woman allegedly beaten to death

PALAPYE: Letlhakane police are investigating a case in which a 33-year-old man beat his 34-year-old girlfriend from Zoroga to death following an argument recently at Tsutsugo cattlepost.

According to the station commander, superintendent Michael Maphephu, the deceased together with the accused and their group of friends went on a drinking spree at a shebeen. Apparently the arguments started on their way home from the sheeben.

“They were travelling on a donkey cart with their two friends which unfortunately had a breakdown as one of the tyres deflated. Their two companions then alighted from the donkey cart choosing to walk home leaving the two lovers behind.”  He added: “It was a peaceful night up until the woman started complaining about being tired of walking which angered the accused who started beating her with a stick non stop. When he noticed that the deceased was becoming unresponsive he carried her to a bush where he made a fire and left her there.” Maphephu further stated that the deceased was found dead by a passerby in the early hours of the following day, who then reported the matter to the police. The accused has since been remanded in custody and will make his appearance in court soon on murder charges. Maphephu said when they questioned the accused about what transpired during the incident he told them that he never intended to kill the deceased. The accused told the police that when he left the deceased in the bush he never thought that she was dead, rather had fainted and was going to come back later with transport to fetch her since she was too heavy to carry.
