Sefalana accused robber denies link with crime

PALAPYE: An accused person in the Sefalana robbey, Kabelo Suping, has distanced himself from the crime that he is alleged to have committed jointly with Gofaone Modukanele on October 3, 2012 in Palapye.

However, Chief Magistrate Rebecca Motsamai said that the accused has a case to answer.

”I know nothing about the Sefalana robbery because on the said date I was hospitalised in Gaborone after I was injured by some people at a Gabane club the previous night. I can even produce cards to prove to you that I was not in Palapye the day Sefalana was robbed.”

Suping further told court that he intends to call four people as witnesses, who will also prove that he knows nothing about the said crime. He said these people took him to hospital after he was injured on October 3. He said at the time he was arrested, he was still bandaged in the head.

“I truly do not know anything about the Sefalana robbery. I even told the Investigating Officer (IO) that I was not in Palapye on the alleged date of robbery.”

He denied ever being in the company of Andrew Tamusungu and Moshe Osego who informed the police that he was with them. Suping

further told the court that during his confrontation with the duo they denied knowing him. He said that the police assaulted him for days forcing him to admit to the offence, and that they took his money, which was payment from a cousin for panel beating services rendered.

Meanwhile, the state prosecutor Reuben Sebetlela from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) told Suping that Sefalana was robbed in the morning when there was enough light for many people to witness the crime.

He said the accused persons bought motor vehicles from the robbery proceeds and registered them under other people’s names.

“The reason why you did that is because you acted in common purpose and you were using money proceeds from the Sefalana robbery. You wanted to disassociate yourselves from the cars,” explained Sebetlela.

Suping is charged together with Modukanele, Tamusungu and Osego for robbing Sefalana of approximately P700,000 in cash. All the accused persons are representing themselves in the matter and they pleaded not guilty to the matter.
