BDP founders son murdered

Leon Steinberg, the 64-year-old son of one of the Botswana Democratic Party’s patriarchs, was found murdered in his vehicle on Sunday morning in what initial reports indicate could have been a robbery gone bad.

Leon’s late father, Benny, was among the small group which gathered under the now famous morula tree on February 28, 1962, to form what would later be known as the Botswana Democratic Party. The older Steinberg was appointed treasurer at the initial meeting and would later be elected substantively in the same position at the party’s first congress.

Yesterday, police in Kanye said they were investigating the younger Steinberg’s death after informants led them to the discovery of his body in the passenger seat of his Mazda bakkie.
