Additional P13 million for State House refurbishment

Staff Writer
The Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Margaret Nasha has requested P13 million to be spent in the next seven years on the refurbishment works of State House.

This is in addition to another P10 million spent on the refurbishment of the State House that commenced last year and was scheduled for completion last May. "In addition, the conversion of the old Serious Crime Squad offices to provide accommodation for the BDF sentries at the State House will be completed. The converted BDF sentry will provide accommodation for approximately 60 officers and men. Among other things, the building will have a commander's office, armoury, radio room, kitchen, dinning room and gym," the minister said this week when presenting the National Development Plan 10 (NDP 10).

She added that during NDP 10, her ministry will need P22.7 million for computerisation, an additional P5.7 million for fleet expansion at the Office of the President and P224 million for consultancies. "The funds will cover the installation of additional performance tools and executive leadership development as strategies to enhance performance in the public service. Part of the funds will be used to cater for a number of studies that emanated from the Business and Economic Advisory Council," the minister said.

and patrol roads under NDP 10 will cost about P70 million. Nasha said that preparatory work has already started for the implementation of the project. She said that consultations with farmers along the border with neighbours have already commenced. The assessment of the extent of dilapidation of the fence has been completed.

Other finances have been requested for the presidential jet (P90 million), which is expected to land in the country next month. The ministry has asked for P2.6billion to be used in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Nasha said that great achievements have been made in the national response to HIV/AIDS in NDP 9. "Interventions such as Voluntary Counselling and Testing, routine HIV testing, Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission and Antiretroviral Therapy Programme were scaled up," she said. The refurbishment of Parliament buildings will cost P45 million; development of Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) P19.2 million; development of Office of Ombudsman P18 million. The total budget for the ministry is approximately P3.5 billion for the development plan period. The theme for the ministry is 'Open, Democratic and Accountable Nation'.
