Former Ministry of Local Government, Lands and Housing permanent secretary Elvidge Mhlauli appeared before Gaborone Village Chief Magistrate Lot Moroka on three counts ranging from abuse of office to corrupt award of State land in Gaborone.

The alleged offences were committed in April 1998 and July 2000.  The trial was supposed to start yesterday morning but was postponed to 2pm because his defence attorney had lost his luggage.  The trial was then moved to today.  The case is a sequel to the Lesetedi Commission that was appointed to investigate land allocations in Gaborone.  The commission was appointed after a successful motion by Gaborone West South member of Parliament (MP) Robert Molefhabangwe in 2004.  Another case involving a businessman is before the Broadhurst Magistrates' Court and is nearing completion.
