Vice President Mompati Merafhe is expected to officially commission one of the three Botswana Railways (BR) fully protected level crossings in his home-town of Mahalaphe tomorrow.
BR spokesperson Alina Masenya they have been renewing their signalling and telecommunications infrastructure since 2005 at a cost of P165.5 million. Ansaldo STS, an Australian company is responsible for the project. The company recently opened an office in Gaborone. It manufactures, installs and commissions signalling systems and control equipment for railway mass transit industries.

Masenya explained that renewal of the infrastructure is meant to improve operational efficiency and ensure that BR implements its safety policy, developed in line with Southern African Association safety policy framework. The full protection of level crossings will be based on the density of traffic.
