Power imports surged 24% in the second quarter of this year as reduced use of the costly diesel-fuelled emergency plants saw a decline in local electricity generation.

According to figures released by Statistics Botswana (SB), electricity generation fell 22% in the second quarter of 2016 compared to the same period last year on the back of limited use of the country’s power peaking plants.

The country produced a maximum of 195MW from its two power peaking plants, 90MW from Orapa and 105 from Matshelagabedi.
